There were some matches where James appeared to be losing but Joe encouraged him to hang in there and continue to work hard and fight to get a win. Joe was James' manager and was seen at all of James' matches, as he rooted him on to score victories. Giamatti, a native of New Haven, Connecticut landed the role of Joe Gould. Zellweger was seen in roles in the films "Bridget Jones's Diary", "Jerry Maguire", and "Reality Bites." In 2004, she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the film, "Cold Mountain." Other Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress that year were Shohreh Aghdashloo for "House of Sand and Fog", Marcia Gay Harden for "Mystic River", Patricia Clarkson for "Pieces of April", and Holly Hunter for "Thirteen." Mae was thrilled, at the end of the movie, when James won the Heavyweight Championship. She told Rosemarie and Jay there was no boxing in the house and that they would not be boxers but rather they would go to college. In one scene, James was showing some boxing moves to his and Mae's two children, Rosemarie and Jay, and Mae got upset. Max began to taunt James so Mae grabbed a glass of water and threw it into Max's face. In one scene, James and Mae were at dinner and Max was at the same restaurant. Zellweger, a native of Katy, Texas portrayed Mae Braddock in "Cinderella Man." Mae was James' wife and she worried that he would be severely injured, as a boxer, but she eventually accepted his career and told him she would always be behind him. Crowe starred in the movies "Virtuosity", "Body of Lies", and "The Quick and the Dead." In 2000, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for the film, "The Insider", but he lost to Kevin Spacey for "American Beauty." Other Oscar nominees for Best Actor in a Leading Role that year were Sean Penn for "Sweet and Lowdown", Denzel Washington for "The Hurricane", and Richard Farnsworth for "The Straight Story." Despite this loss, Crowe won an Oscar the following year for Best Actor in a Leading Role for the film "Gladiator." In the final match, Jim and Max fought for several rounds, and it ended with Jim being named the winner. He became the number one contender to defeat the Heavyweight Champion, Max Baer. However, Jim fully recovered from his injury and went on to win some important matches. Since his career lasted during The Great Depression, he looked hard to find some work but, due to the poor economy, he had small and minor jobs that lasted for just a couple of days. James was a boxer and he injured his hand so he was out of boxing for some time. Crowe, born on April 7th, 1964 in Wellington, New Zealand was cast as James Braddock. |
